Every Skool4Kidz child had fun ushering in the Year of the Dragon with their family members at their centres this month.
Dressed in their festive best and carrying Mandarin oranges, they had a joyous time wishing their teachers and friends a prosperous New Year. Choruses of “Gong Xi Fa Cai” and “Xin Nian Kuai Le” rang out loud across the classrooms.
It was a magical day filled with laughter, learning and festive celebration. They enjoyed bonding with their loved ones and friends, singing and dancing to new year songs.
The children also participated in various customary activities such as storytelling, arts and craft, games, calligraphy, lantern riddles and dumpling-making.
Over at Skool4Kidz Preschool @ Sembawang Canberra East Crown, the teachers even brought the Nian legend to life through a skit. The young ones also learned through the skit how loud noises, bright lights and anything red could be used to chase away a monster called Nian (Year), which attacked villagers at the beginning of every new year.
At the Woodleigh Hillside centre, the K1 and K2 classes performed the Chinese Dragon and Lion Dances expressing their jubilation for the new year.
Of course, the celebration would be incomplete without the children relishing the wide spread of Chinese New Year snacks. Everyone had their share of dumplings, spring rolls, cookies and “nian gao” (sweet rice cakes).
To top off the celebration, they had a merry time tossing “Yu Sheng”, the traditional raw fish salad, with their parents, educators and friends.
What a memorable and wonderful opportunity for the children to learn and cherish together the rich traditions associated with Lunar New Year.
