Once a week, a number of seniors from the St Luke Eldercare Centre would drop in at either Skool4Kidz Campus @ One Punggol or St Luke’s for a day of interactive activities. Afterall the centres are neighbours. St Luke’s is on the fourth floor and Skool4Kidz one floor below it in One Punggol Community Hub.
The children have been meeting with the seniors since the Skool4Kidz campus was opened in the beginning of 2023. Intergenerational activities include field trips for children and seniors to go out together, parents and next-of-kins of the elders are also invited to join our field trips to museums and local farms.
This programme has been specifically designed to give the seniors’ lives a lift and the children the opportunity to understand, relate to and bond with them. It not only promotes mutual understanding and support across generations but also creates a sense of community and belonging. It is a part of Skool4Kidz’s commitment to creating inclusive, supportive environments for all members of the community.
The intergenerational programming framework rides on the theme of “Discovery of the World” in Skool4Kidz children’s learning. It comprises Discovering People, Discovering Our Community and Discovering Nature & the Environment.
Children acquire social awareness, mindfulness and acceptance of ageing as part of growth. When engaging in activities with the seniors, they learn the values of patience, respect, empathy, kindness and care.
Activities include self-introductions, ice-breaking games, simple fitness workouts, art and craft, singing uplifting songs, dancing, story-telling as well as performances by the children for the elderly.
Skool4Kidz Campus @ One Punggol also has a large multi-purpose area equipped with digital tools like Mimio (Interactive Whiteboard), iPad, BeeBot (coding Robot) and a magnetic wall where the elderly and children could sort, match, form patterns, complete puzzles and even form images etc.
The children have grown fond of the seniors and look forward to more activities with them.
