Meet our little coding champs: Skool4Kidz Space Explorers.
Representing Skool4Kidz, our little ones won the second prize in the recent MatataWorld Robotics Competition (MWRC). The competition is a global robotics event that aims to improve children’s all-round skills through fun and challenging coding activities.
Our team named ‘Skool4Kidz Space Explorers’ from Skool4Kidz @ Yishun Oleander Breeze, won the ‘Matatalab Creative Star Year Award’. The award included a $500 cash prize, participation certificate and souvenir. The team also qualified for the 2021 offline finals.
Organised by technology education company Matatalab and themed ‘Space Exploration’, the competition is designed to increase children’s self-confidence in science and technology. It also helps them apply what they learn to solve real-life problems, explore and create a new world of their own.
Exploring Space through Coding
There were two phases in the competition. The first phase was ‘Fly to Space’ which included a rocket launch, earth orbit and space station docking.
Successful participants in the first phase were advanced to the second and final phase called ‘Mars Exploration’. This phase required contestants to create an open-ended project on the theme of migration to Mars.
Building from their props from scratch, our little ones hand-made all their props for the competition.

For props, Skool4Kidz Space Explorers used recyclable paper, boards, popsicle sticks, clay, boxes and Legos to construct buildings, craters and landing craft.

About MatataWorld Robotics Competition (MWRC)
Participating teams were required to create DIY prop scenes based on Matatalab’s required coding tasks. The completed tasks were documented on video and submitted online for sharing. The creative works by participants from all over the world were shared on the competition homepage.
All the entries were judged based on four criteria, namely DIY designs of maps and props, task completion, solution novelty and plausibility, and solution optimization.
The top award was the Matatalab Shining Star Year Award ($1,000 cash prize) and the third was the Matatalab Coding Star Year Award ($300 cash prize). Twenty teams won the merit Matatalab Team Star Year Award.
