On 20 November 2023, The Straits Times published an article discussing digital literacy and technology-based learning amongst preschools in Singapore.
“Preschools prepare children to use technology and tools confidently” featured several preschools and their 21st-Century approach to early years education. Data privacy, cyber-bullying and interactive digital learning tools such as iPads were key topics of discussion. Such tools have helped Kindergarten children improve their bilingual studies while developing logic and reasoning skills.
Coding and artificial intelligence (AI) also make lessons more engaging and interactive. Skool4Kidz’s use of coding robots such as the Bee-Bot was recognised as one such resource.
The article described how the children could program the tech toy to “collect” pictures of plants by moving on a grid mat.
“They can also use a tablet to scan QR codes paired with each plant to get more information about it,” it said.
The article also quoted Skool4Kidz Curriculum Founder Dr Jane Ching-Kwan. Dr Jane mentioned how Skool4Kidz centres “use technology tools and resources that are appropriate, purposeful, and have an element of play.”
Skool4Kidz’s thematic-based learning programme approach encourages preschoolers to develop critical 21st-Century life skills. Since inception in 2014, Skool4Kidz has used technology to develop computational thinking, active problem-solving, social interaction and creative confidence.
In 2017, Skool4Kidz was the first preschool to host the largest Hour of Code event. This is a part of a worldwide movement to help the next generation learn future-ready technology skills. Skool4Kidz has continued to celebrate Hour of Code every year.
